This means I lay my personal issues aside for our time together and try to make my internal responses into something of a sensitive instrument, perhaps a tuning fork, that can resonate to your personal experience. (Freud liked the analogy of a telephone receiver). This resonance, which I put together with my formal training in psychology, proceeds to inform me about what might be wrong – about “how” you’re hurting.
